The team responds to barricaded gunmen and hostage situations. The team also assists the Narcotics Intelligence Unit in serving high-risk drug warrants.

Being a member of the S.W.A.T. team is an additional duty taken by the officers on the team. These officers come from many sections of the police department but most are assigned to the Patrol Division.

To be a member of the S.W.A.T. team an officer must be in good physical condition and be able to complete a rigorous physical test. The candidate must also shoot 90% or higher on the S.W.A.T. team pistol course. The candidates must also go through an oral interview and have a clean disciplinary record.
